About Pittsburgh Penguins |
| |
Founded during the 1967 “Original Expansion” (the movement that took the NHL from six teams to twelve) the Penguins have competed in the Atlantic Division of the Eastern Conference. The 2009/10 season is the last for Mellon Arena, the only venue which the team has played.
The team played average hockey until the 1984 draft of QMJHL superstar Mario Lemieux which launched the team to another level. By 1990, Lemieux was helping the franchise collect its first Stanley Cup and repeated the feat in the next 91-92 season. Upon his retirement in 1997, the league waived its normal 3-year waiting period and inducted Lemieux into the Hall of Fame in the same year.
The team returned to the playoffs in the 2007/08 season but again won the Stanley Cup in the 2008/09 season. Evgeni Malkin became the first Russian player to win the MVP Con Smythe Trophy.
The Penguins will move into their new Arena, Consol Energy center beginning in the 2010-11 NHL Season.
